Island Mljet is a romantic looking island in the south Dalmatian archipelago. Mljet is located south of peninsular Peljesac which is only separated by a channel. The island is only about 100 km² big and surrounded by soft chains of hills and pine woods as well as holly oaks are characteristic for this area. As a special animal there lives the mongoose there which only is to find in Asia normally.
Due to two salt lakes on Mljet and to the great variety of species there was the Mljet National Park founded in 1960. This park takes about a third of the whole island. There are a lot of rare animals and plants domiciled there; this diversity of species is absolutely charming.
The Island Mljet is especially for tourists who want to get recreation and like the solitariness in Croatia. There are many places like Blace, Kozarica or Okuklje where only a few habitants live. A lot of those people have gotten used to visitors and offer holiday apartments and accommodation possibilities, for example in Prozurska Luka or in Soline. There is a supermarket in Saplunara which is between Sobra and Babine Kuce.
Besides of the back country and the coasts of Mljet also the old bridges and the monasteries are worth seeing. Many villages like Polace, Pomena or Ropa show a lot of the ancient history of Island Mljet.
